Reports from the field:

Picked up two HP Pavilion XL768 Athlon 900 MHz systems Friday and they came today. The link below only works until this auction ends tomorrow, although they've been running it in a number of auctions over the last month (I have no affiliation with Egghead or HP).

I mention it because I had not looked at HP computers in a while and had not expected much more than the parts. I was surprised to find standard form factor drives, 5 or 6 PCI slots, stand alone video, sound+modem, and network cards. They are billed as refurb but appear brand now. Anyway, I got two because I had two spare 64 Meg PC-100 CL2 simms and figured I'd combine the two 128's from the two machines in one machine and then put the two 64's in the other. Sure is fast; but then I gave my Dell 800 to my son last year and have been working with those slow PIII 450/500 boxes since.

I also got my WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux Deluxe Friday, so I'll be putting that and Redhat 7 on the 128 900 tomorrow. WP for Linux comes with the Corel Linux OS CD. I'm going to stay with redhat so if anyone wants the Corel CD, PM me an address and I'll mail it to the first one.

I also noticed a new startup program, ssdpsrv.exe, that implements "universal plug and play". whatever that is. Apparently it goes out to the net using port 5000. I'm not sure what the implications are, but I edited the registry to remove it after reading the following:
