Double-Standards at the NYT

Media Blog
Stephen Spruiell Reporting

My friend Louis W. writes in after spotting a double-standard at work in today's NYT:

<<< I'm sure finding bias in the NYT is pretty old hat for you now, but I saw two articles in that I thought might interest you — both on the National section, both filed today, both about corruption...

In "Atlanta Jury to Decide Case of Former Mayor" by Brenda Goodman, the writer details in 721 words how former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell's trial for taking more than $250,000 in bribes from city contractors is going to the jury. The word "Democrat" does not appear even once to describe Mr. Cambell, though he is. Ditto for "democratic" or "Democrats".

"Abramoff Says Top Republicans Were Allies" by Reuters recounts in 285 words how Abramoff is saying in a Vanity Fair article how he was tight with all the top Republicans. Incidentally, nothing as brash as $250,000 in bribes is being discussed. "Republican" or "Republicans" appears 5 times - 6 if you count the headline. >>>

Speaking of double-standards, has anyone read anything in the mainstream press about the fact that John Conyers was allegedly using his staffers as his personal servants? The NYT has not reported on Conyers' apparent ethics violations, but it did quote him criticizing President Bush in this article today.
