In a world of black and white, good and evil, them and us, America voted for BLACK, EVIL and (gasp) THEM.
Or did we? Maybe we voted for some of US, some of us who see things differently, more clearly, less rigidly and more realistically.
The scared shitless, for us or agin us, the sky is falling and we need to sacrifice liberty for safety crowd has done much for this country. They've spent thousands of lives and billions of dollars in an Iraq war that's destabilized the mid east, given a rocket boost to the ideology of violent terrorism, given legitimacy to radical Islamicists and trained up tens of thousands of jihadist nuts.
The use of oppressive tactics on the other side of the world doesn't win hearts and minds, doesn't cure radicalism and doesn't make America or the world more civilized or more safe. Left to continue this headlong charge into idiocy the proponents of the last few year's policies might well have made their prophecy of a world in chaos come to fruition.
Americans have said, very clearly, "stop being so damn blind and start working smart."
Voices like those of Jim Baker who tried to warn off W from his fatally flawed strategies for years will now have the backing of the House and, probably, the Senate. That's a good thing.
Alternative strategies have not yet been fully articulated. In terms of such differing policies by our elected leaders, it may be time for you to lose the certainty that there's only one right way...your way...and that every other way is not only wrong but disloyal and guaranteed to send the world to a hellish end. That is, after all, the kind of watchful waiting that's required when you become a minority voice in a democracy.
