If i am correct, the RTT(round trip time) data is also collected and used to decide how long to wait for an acknowledgement before sending the data again and whether expected RTT should be increased. This helps to cope with multiple transmission media because they have different latencies.

(i could be wrong. It has been a while since i looked into these things).
