I see things almost exactly opposite of that writer. Rumsfield is a executives executive. One tough hombre and needed to remake the military into a fast lean fighting machine. Gates to me is a technocrat. I seriously doubt he has the fire in his belly to push Generals and Admirals around which is what it took and why Rummy occassionally gets negative comments from RETIRED staff officers. I do not doubt Gates intelligence, I just doubt his ability to enforce his will upon his underlings. Hopefully Rummy has now accomplished all the heavy lifting and a concilitating technocrat is just the man for the job. Time will tell. jdn
