Time will tell. High prices and chronic shortages can be a powerful incentive in expediting development. Alberta's oil sands are quite profitable now and production is growing like gangbusters. They don't call Fort McMurray, Fort McMoney without good reason. :-)

Coal to gas and liquid is economically viable at prices well below todays. South Africa's SASOL has been doing it for years and currently produces 150,000 barrels per day, profitably. We could build similar facilities here that could produce far greater amounts than that.

Large amounts of alternative carbon based fuel sources can be developed in the US (and should be) if the political impediments are removed. Probably won't happen any time soon with ethanol boondoggles and greenie windmills receiving priority..
