Hi Peter.

True, not every information worker bee and factory schlepper has access to a twelve-lane multipoint-to-multipoint road system on their terminal device. I singled out Cisco because the latter is the most visible and vocal company promoting high-end systems, but in fairness I could have also listed a half-dozen other top-tier names as well.

My larger point, however, had to do with workplace fit apropos collaborative workforces in real day-to-day work environments, as apposed to suits who line up in queues for a specially scheduled room session that requires scheduling days or weeks in advance. Those are two entirely different, almost diametrically-opposite, sets of requirements.

Nor is what I'm saying true only of high-end systems. I routinely come across corporate conference rooms that have been outfitted with high-end and near-high-end systems that are under lock and key in specially appointed rooms, only to learn that most of them lie fallow most of the time.

So, while the cost of telecoms access may be, as you suggest, a significant inhibitor to the uptake of high-end systems, at the lower-end of the scale it's the lack of access to the systems themselves that is also to blame. More importantly, however, it's the ease of use and the immediacy that is afforded by IM and email that make them more appealing and useful to ordinary collaborative workers, which is what my post was really all about in the first place.
