(COMTEX) B: Vertel Announces 'Project eORB' For Next Generation Netwo B: Vertel Announces 'Project eORB' For Next Generation Network and Service Management ATLANTA, Jun 8, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) -- Breakthrough CORBA-based Intelligent Network Agent Platform Brings Superior Performance and Scalability to Drive Carrier-Grade Convergent Networks Vertel(R) (NASDAQ: VRTL), a leading provider of multi-management solutions for telecommunications networks, today announced at SuperComm '99 "Project eORB," an initiative to develop a new breed of embedded Intelligent Network Agents (INAs) that facilitate the integration and operation of next generation telecommunications networks. Based on CORBA standards, the eORB platform is the nucleus of specialized INAs designed to connect and integrate network and management elements with the data and processes required enabling true carrier-grade convergent network services. With the deployment of "Project eORB," Vertel is among the first network management solutions providers in the industry to develop an embeddable CORBA-based framework that is defined specifically for telecommunications. Field testing of "Project eORB" technologies is currently underway with general availability scheduled for the end of third quarter 1999. "'Project eORB' represents the most optimal and the first commercially available CORBA implementation to support the demanding requirements of embedded Intelligent Network Agents," said Bruce Brown, president and chief executive officer of Vertel. "Not only have we achieved carrier-grade performance and scalability through our micro-kernel architecture, but we are now offering our customers the flexibility they need in terms of telecom specific services, operations over multiple transport technologies, such as ATM or a wireless transport such as IRDA, operating system portability, and object-model neutrality." Vertel's eORB Developed to Meet Rigorous Requirements of Major Convergent Network Operators The model for eORB was developed by Expersoft in collaboration with Sprint for Sprint ION, the Integrated, On-Demand Network. Expersoft, a pioneer in distributed object technology, was recently acquired by Vertel. "Project eORB" combines carrier-grade ORB and telecom specific CORBA services, allowing network management programs to perform distributed computing subject to rigorous performance requirements under extremely demanding operating environments. "We are currently engaged with Vertel/Expersoft in the development of a carrier-grade ORB to support our distributed processing environment, a key element of the Sprint ION infrastructure," said Mike Gettles, lead engineer for Sprint Advanced Technology Development. INAs developed using the eORB platform streamline the automation and integration of Operations Support Systems (OSSs) that function in a distributed processing environment. This integration is essential to the deployment of carrier-grade services over convergent networks. With 'carrier-grade' scalability, reliability and performance and telecom specific services, Vertel's new INA platform offers telecommunications carriers faster time to market for new services, reduced cost of operations and enhanced customer service with greatly enhanced speed of service delivery to customers. "Our customers and strategic partners urged us to develop a distributed platform because they wanted an interoperability solution for convergent networks that embodied Vertel performance and reliability," said Bruce Brown, president and CEO of Vertel. "It is extremely gratifying to announce our new eORB platform which takes CORBA to the next level, making it a reliable and highly optimized platform for building management solutions for nextgenerationnetworks." Vertel Leading the Industry Move Towards CORBA-based Management Platforms Vertel's new focus on distributed processing platforms for network and service management is driven by the growing demand for solutions that enable carrier-grade convergent network services. Convergent networks, which support broadband, IP and integrated voice/data/video services, are being engineered with a more data communications centric architecture, providing unlimited combinations of transmission technologies, intelligent devices and services. Next generation telecommunications management systems must provide the ability to integrate with as many different types of network devices as possible, from gigabit IP switches to set-top boxes, allowing companies to build cohesive, cost-effective information systems infrastructures. "The unique design of the ORB micro kernel supports 'pay-for-use' resource management allowing eORB-based INAs to operate on a Palm Pilot using Palm OS, as well as network switching and transmission devices using real time operating systems such as VxWorks(R)," said Tom Greene, vice president of engineering for Vertel. "This is a significant advancement in the use of CORBA technology in the embedded INA environment." "Given the growing number of CORBA-based OSS implementations, it makes sense for Vertel to develop its next generation Intelligent Network Agent using an enhanced ORB platform," said Rob, senior vice president of Telecommunications research for the Yankee Group, a Boston, Mass.-based research firm. "Vertel's deep knowledge of carrier-grade management requirements, experience with a broad variety of large global equipment manufacturers and service providers, and recently acquired expertise in CORBA through the acquisition of Expersoft, position them as a leading supplier for management of next generation networks." eORB Characterized by Superior Performance To compare and ultimately prove the performance characteristics of the eORB platform, an independently defined benchmark against four commercially and academically available ORBs has been undertaken by Vertel. The results show that the eORB platform outperformed other tested ORBs in the following categories: -- Throughput marshalling speed -- for primitive CORBA types, tests indicate a 46% to 474% improvement over the current fastest industry leading ORBs. -- Throughput volume -- across the spectrum of message sizes, tests indicate a 79% to 326% improvement over the best of the competitor ORBs. As progressively greater volumes of data transfer are demanded of the ORB's core marshalling engine, eORB consistently continues to outperform all other ORBs. -- Latency -- using industry benchmarks, eORB consistently exhibits the lowest latency in its class. -- Scalability -- invocation times remain near constant as the number of objects increase, with the initial invocation times less than those of competitor ORBs. -- Footprint -- eORB employs stack minimized, hybrid stubs that possess the advantageous features of compiled and interpreted stubs. This, plus dynamic "on-demand" loading of modules, enables eORB to have the minimal static and dynamic runtime footprint in the industry. Vertel to Demonstrate eORB based INAs at SuperComm 1999 in Atlanta Vertel is showcasing eORB-based INAs running on various devices responsible for network management ranging from network elements, such as an ATM edge switch running VxWorks, a Windows(R) CE Clio device, and hand-held devices such as the 3COM PalmV(TM) running Palm OS. The remote network devices employ INAs to provide a unified network view for fault management, in a multi-technological, multi-vendor environment. The demonstration illustrates: -- Performance of eORB on small devices -- Minimized footprint -- Interoperability with server level Orbs and CORBA services -- Legacy integration with multiple protocol support -- Component reusability About Vertel Corporation Vertel is a leading provider of telecom network management software and solutions that support multiple management technologies.
