I believe it's much simpler: Oracle's products are not comprehensible to the average user, whereas Microsoft's are.

If Coca Cola had a problem with their products, the press would write about it. If Siemens had, the press wouldn't.

Being a standard is not the issue here. PR is a discipline that must be handled well by companies that want to sell products to consumers. Microsoft isn't good at handling PR outside USA, which gives all international press a good reason to write about negative issues regarding Microsoft products.

Oracle is a business 2 business only thing, don't compare their PR performance to Microsoft's. Microsoft's task is much harder.
