One thing standing in the way of a merger is a limitation on the number and/or area of claims any company can hold in the DR ... but of course, such regulations are arbitrarily imposed, can be just as arbitrarily rescinded ... they do already cooperate on info/data, bought drilling equipment together, try to avoid damaging each other politically by their actions/statements ... a lot of the benefits of togetherness can be gained while independent and accountable each to their own shareholders
How do the locals on the ground feel about each, that's what i'd like to know ... onepath has at least been to the island, i never have, and never knew any dominicanos very well ... it would be great to have some excuse to hang out in the area of Romero and drink beer with locals, be a 'writer' or something, maybe say nothing and let the rumour that you're hiding out from gringo law just develop by itself, there are lots of places that love you for that, especially if you're standing for the round
Ultimately any mining project will go ahead or not according to how folks in the immediate vicinity feel about it ... there is always support, some of it strong ... there is always opposition, some of it strong ... trick is to convert some of the latter into the former, on balance, by using good planning, a few bucks at times, and a whole lot of smarts all the way through
