Rush learned early on, when his show got very popular, that weirdo's and seminar callers would sometimes flood the lines. Some were no doubt paid by the Democrat party.

He changed in order to stay focused on a particular story in the news. And keep the show interesting.

Screening callers and not accepting differences of opinions are two entirely different things. Issues are explored and people who disagree are given time on the air. If you've been listening, as you say, you would know this.

Tightly controlled script is a mischaracterization. Remember, most shows are live, not pre-recorded. And the back and forth nature of the shows lend itself to "thinking on your feet".

Quite a bit different then television and newspapers. The only thing comparable would be internet chat. Bulletin boards come close, but as you know, we have time to think about our responses and type when we feel the urge.
