NYT Ombudsman: We Do Great Job Covering Conservatives

I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head at this article by NYT Ombudsman Byron Calume. In his "Public Editor" column Calume lauds the NYT for their special coverage of conservatives, which started in 2004.
<<< The original mandate for the beat was to examine conservative forces in religion, politics, law, business and the media. The goals of the beat, Mr. Keller said last week, continue to be identifying "the thinkers and the grass roots they organize" and exploring "how the conservative movement works to be heard in Washington." He reiterated his strong desire for three-dimensional coverage of the conservative movement. Basically, he said, "we wanted to understand them."...The new beat and the prominent display that Mr. Keller and his editors have given significant articles it produces have spawned a greater awareness of conservative perspectives across the newsroom. "It's created a kind of awakening," Suzanne Daley, the national editor, said. "It's definitely contagious." >>>
How funny, and "un-surprising" is it that the NYT newsroom had no idea how conservatives thought. Even now, it seems they are treating them like the newest animal at the zoo - with a mixture of curiosity, puzzlement and fear of the unknown.
Let me try to help you poor folks in the NYT building to help you understand conservatives. Keep in mind this is simplified for your benefit. We want to kill terrorists, we don't blame America for all the world's problems, believe that we should keep more of our tax money, that the government that governs best, governs least (President Bush and the Congress haven't wrapped their arms around this one), want less regulation, believe in free markets, believe life begins at conception, don't think the government should restrict free speech, want judges that interpret and not make the law, and believe that our rights come from a Creator (whatever you want to call that Creator), and not the government.
