Karen,

I'm in Seattle, have good friends in Idleyld Park up the Umpqua.

I was born and raised here and I get a little perturbed when people complain about forestry practices.

Our landscapes have been altered by the need for wood products as you very well must know. Although the argument has gone on for years about decimating the forests, in reality the forest industry is more regulated and better managed than at any time in history.

All around the area that I live in and in other areas that I have visited, poplars are being farmed to supply mankind with paper. The voices of the people via conservation concerns have and are being constantly taken into consideration when decisions are made regarding the use of our forest lands.

I have traveled on roads that were built for the express purpose of logging. The ability to access the back country and to take off by foot is one aspect that some would like to eliminate. I also firmly believe that the automobile is not the root of all evil.

Like many Americans, I'm hopeful that alternative fuel sources will be allowed to flourish. I say "allow" because I am sure there are forces that wish to delay that inevitability. But.......Karen, for now and at this place and time I drive an automobile. It is how most of us travel to and from some place at some time in our lives.

I believe that all Americans should have access to our wilderness areas. I believe that for now the people responsible for managing our national forests are doing a good job considering the obstacles that must be overcome before any use whatsoever can take place.

Many of the products that Americans and other humans around the world use on a daily basis consist of wood products and wood by products. For anyone to believe that we can exist as we do without wood products is naive. We must get our wood products somewhere and the industry is doing a good job of managing this renewable resource whose products we all enjoy in one form or another.

For all I know you could be employed in that industry? That is fine. If so, you just got the very honest opinion from another American.

Anyway now that I have ranted on and on about that.....

My husband just walked in from a very long day and he is hungry. So am I for that matter.

BTW a hijab is the veil worn by Muslim women.

Best
