Fred -

Intel has acquired a few companies in the past, mostly for longer term strategic issues such as promoting a new technology. They have never demonstrated a bent for major growth through acquisition.

My guess is that Intel will continue to invest heavily in their basic technology and designs. Essentially, they will stick with what brought them to the party.

They have continued to parlay this into excellent growth. They know this (the CPU/PC business) and know how to manage it well.

I believe they (Intel management) are smart enough not to venture into territories/technologies that they do not understand. Bascially, they seem to be able to contain their own egos, and have done remarkably well.

As a contrast - witness the the big acquisitions of recent vintage:

A T & T aquires NCR in 1990 (or therabout) and this year - they dump NCR.

General Motors acquired EDS in the early 1980s and now they are set to spin it off again.

Borland acquired Ashton-Tate in 1991 or 1992. They have never recovered fro this debacle.

Growth thru acquistion is no guarantee of scuccess.

Paul
