Without a subscription fee tying customers to Freeserve, some could sign up and quickly switch to another provider, or never use Freeserve at all. AOL Europe thinks advertisers will prefer hard demographics that come from a subscription-based service that knows the names, addresses and credit card numbers of who is online. XSNI will have the same problem. But they don't have a line of retail products to make up the losses from service costs and uncertain advertising. And we don't know how much working capital or other lines of credit they can draw on. That's the dangerous part of the mystery.
