There's truth in what you say. Public education often does a good job with kids at the high end and at the low end of the education ladder. Catholic schools, on the other hand, may do a better job with the 30 to 75 percentile kids. Part of the reason is that Catholic schools, for the most part, don't have to deal with the special ed kids, and many gifted kids are attracted to accelerated programs at public high schools. The end result is probably as you say ... a more uniform level of challenge and expectation.
