The underlying issue here is keeping these boards as non-commercial opinion and fact finding entities. When they are taken over by manipulative tactics or by those seeking to use hype or manipulation to promote their private sites or to further their profit on selectively leaked "press releases" or self-styled exposes, then this tends to denigrate the ideals of an open, non-commercial place to gather for news and opinions.

Fine. But there could be hundreds or thousands of SI members who are bright enough and modest enough not to disclose they are doing exactly what you fear. SI can barely keep up with the cat fights and pissing matches that erupt on the boards every day.

People shouldn't steal purses out of unlocked cars, but some do. That's why we lock our doors instead of just giving civic lectures to passersby on the street.

I see your point - I just don't think the rules will make a damn bit of difference to anyone with a seriously malicious intent. It's like export controls on encryption technology. The bad guys already have what they want and they can get more whenever they like.

SI aliases are easy to abuse. If I switch to an alias, a few months later you won't know I'm the same person you were exchanging views with today.

Thanks for an interesting discussion.
