I'm just now joining SI and I'm finding this thread to be great reading!

I'd like to point out that although there are distance restrictions on ADSL/VDSL, the starting points need NOT be at the central office. ADSL and VDSL can be deployed from pedestals in the neighborhood, thus reducing overall copper lengths to manageable runs. The pedestal, in turn, is being fed by fiber-optic SONET rings to the central offices or head ends. Some variants of FTTC are now being designed using this topology mix.
