Larry Thompson, who served as deputy attorney general until last year and is a personal favorite of the president, is leading candidate to replace Ashcroft, a Republican close to White House said. If appointed, Thompson, 58, would be first African-American to lead Justice... But Thompson recently became senior executive PepsiCo, and has indicated he is not interested.. Among other contenders are White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, who would be first Hispanic attorney general, and Marc Racicot, chairman of Bush's re-election effort.
