Bill,

Interesting Y2K story on NPR last night. While interviewing a programmer who is dealing with the Y2K problem, he stated an obvious point that any programmer should realize, yet I haven't heard it mentioned on these threads.

To paraphrase, the guy said that finding and correcting the Y2K problems are about 10% of the challenge...But when you change the code to correct Y2K problems, the other 90% of the effort will be finding and changing the rest of the code that is effected by the correction of Y2K problems.

For non-programmers, think of it this way. A complicated computer program is like taking a bunch of rubber bands and looping each band around a number of your fingers and toes. A good program will offset the "pull" or balance of these bands. When you move one, it has an effect on the others and you need to make other adjustments to "rebalance" the rest of the rubber bands. When you correct the Y2K code, you need to make many additional adjustments in the code so the whole program works.

This is just another reason why Y2K companies are a scam. They are playing on the misunderstanding of the real problem. To my knowledge, none of these so called Y2K companies actually help address the real time consuming problems.

It's like taking your car to the mechanic and having him tell you what's wrong with your car and sending you on your way. Unless you are a mechanic yourself, the information doesn't do you any good. And if you ARE a mechanic, why the hell are you taking it to another one?
