FDNY RIPS DEGREE-GIOUS CONDUCT
By STEPHANIE GASKELL

February 9, 2007 -- The Fire Department brought charges yesterday against 14 firefighters who submitted college credits from a now-defunct online diploma mill.
Thirteen high-ranking firefighters and one probationary firefighter were promoted with bogus degrees from St. Regis University, an unaccredited college based in Liberia.

Eleven of the firefighters went on to earn acceptable degrees.

But city investigators said three were promoted despite not having proper credits - and signed up for backdated degrees from St. Regis to cover it up.

The FDNY released a statement yesterday saying that "the 14 individuals were each charged with the following violations of FDNY regulations: knowingly making a false official entry, statement, report or record; conduct bringing reproach upon the Department; and violating the oath of office."

"As with all internal disciplinary proceedings, the penalties could range from monetary fines or suspension, up to termination," the statement said.

It was unclear when any action would be taken.
