Marines are created from their beginnings in boot camp to follow their leader/s. Their leader is their "pack leader", and they must be lead well by that "pack leader". The breakdowns that you are discussing are the result of bad "pack leaders". The press always has and always will bring massacres to the front page. These massacres are always the result of bad leaders who allow this behavior. Those who perform well do appreciate medals and awards. They always do. Good leaders never allow these type of breakdowns in their units.
