KT develops asynchronous IMT-2000 switching system

etnews.co.kr|03

Korea Telecom has developed an asynchronous
IMT-2000 switching system that can be
operated with existing ATM(asynchronous
transfer mode) switches. The asynchronous
IMT-2000 technology was developed over the
past three years with the Electronics &
Telecommunication Research Institute(ETRI).

The new IMT-2000 switching system consists
of a mobile service switching center(MSC),
service control point(SCP) and a home location
register(HLR), KT said. The MSC is equipped
with GSM-MAP, an IMT-2000 network
protocol.

Korea Telecom plans to integrate the new
IMT-2000 switching system and ATM switches.
It also plans to transfer the technology to
domestic communication equipment makers.

A KT official said some communication service
providers want to adopt synchronous mode for
IMT-2000 service, however, it will offer service
based on asynchronous technology.
