Democrat Offensive: Blame Bush, and Stage Events with Military

The Washington Times reports that Senate Democrats have "mapped a political battle plan for the March congressional recess that calls on lawmakers to stage press events with active duty military personnel, veterans and emergency responders to bash President Bush on virtually every one of his national security policies."

Democrats have made it a habit to criticize every single time that President Bush, our Commander-In-Chief, would give a speech on the war on terror, and "using a military audience as a 'backdrop' for his speech." John Kerry might remember saying something to that effect.

What's really sad about their plan is their staged sense of patriotism for these events:

<<< The game plan, devised by the office of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, is contained in a six-page memo distributed to Democratic senators on Thursday at a closed-door meeting at the Capitol and provided to The Washington Times by a congressional staffer.

Titled "Real Security," the political document calls for staged town hall events at military bases, weapons factories, National Guard units, fire stations and veterans posts.

"Ensure that you have the proper U.S. and state flags at the event, and consider finding someone to sing the national anthem and lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the event," the battle plan states. >>>

In their hopes of using the military for political purposes, Reid and his fellow Democrats in the Senate seemed to overlook the fact that political events are prohibited on military bases. Reid's spokesman claims these events are not political because they involve incumbents who are running for reelection, not challengers. Reid's spokesman claims that the events are meant to highlight the need for "increased funding for the troops." Well, that's funny... it seems like all the Democrats do is complain every time Bush asks for funding for our troops... and when I say complain, I don't mean they complain the troops aren't getting enough, they complain that they get too much. And they generally support defense cuts...

<<< The Senate plan urges holding town hall events to "draw attention to the security vulnerabilities caused by the Bush budget and explain how Democrats fought to restore programs that keep America safe." >>>

I wonder how Democrats will explain how their desire to kill the NSA Terrorist Surveillance Program makes us safer. If they think America will be safer by not wiretapping terrorists, by all means, they can take that message on the road.

<<< In almost every issue in the Reid memo, Democratic lawmakers are called upon to criticize the president for not spending enough federal dollars. >>>

That's the crux of any Democrat's strategy, to criticize Bush for everything. If the Democrats oppose funding for our troops, blame Bush. If the Democrats oppose wiretapping terrorists, blame Bush for making us less safe. If the economy is strong, blame Bush and say the economy sucks. If the weather is too cold, blame Bush. If you're stuck in traffic, blame Bush. You get the idea.

The Democrat's plan seems to be very thorough, as they clearly have choreographed almost every aspect. Their plan urges the following actions to be taken by Democrats:

<<< - "Hold a town hall meeting with state officials and a local National Guard unit at their armory to discuss the security impact of long deployments. ... Ask National Guard members to offer input on how security and disaster response at home is compromised by long deployments."

- "Hold a town hall meeting with troops at a local military installation. ... When selecting a location at the military installation for the event, make sure to select a space that allows easy press access and clearly conveys the message in the shot. Planes, vehicles, equipment and signage in the background enhance the pictures coming out of your event."

- "Work with [veterans] organizations ... to find recently returned Iraq and Afghanistan veterans willing to discuss the mental effects they or their fellow veterans have experienced."

- "Tour a factory in your state that manufactures military equipment like Humvees or body armor and hold a press availability afterwards with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans on the importance of protective equipment."

- "Visit the home of a military family that has purchased body armor on their own for a family member serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and hold an open press 'conversion' on the issue. ... Ask the family if they would be willing to hold the open press conversation/town hall meeting in their yard, on their front porch or in their home." >>>

The plan is obviously designed to change the Democrats image that they are anti-military by exploiting liberal veterans of either the war in Afghanistan or the war in Iraq, and staging public events with military-related backdrops. I think it's safe to say any veterans or other military personnel they enlist for their political attacks with be coached, scripted, and rehearsed for these made-for-tv events.

Ironic isn't it, Democrats, who generally support flag burning are now trying to give themselves a makeover by wrapping themselves in the flag. By the time they are done, they're going to be burned quite badly.

One thing that seems to be missing from this report, and probably their plan in general, is any proposals for increase funding for our troops.
