Most US churches were very weak during the Vietnam War. It took many of 'em a long time to get their position pappers on the right page. Only when more and more clergy united in a call for the end of the war, did some churches take stands. The Catholic Church, as I recall, was very weak on supporting those who embraced pacifism.

I do think the church scandals of today will weaken their ability to become a strong and united voice against war. Indeed, 'tis a bad time for American armies to move forward.
