OT ** John, this may help someone get cheaper landline phone service: I have the AT&T u-verse gateway [modem/router combo]. Rather than use their phone service I signed up with VOIPO. Voipo provides a small adapter [free] that plugs into the gateway [as if it were another computer]. I've had it for over 3 years and unlimited USA/Canada calls cost me about $7/month [when they have a 1 or 2 year prepay promo]. AT&T is not involved except that they provide internet connectivity.

PS: the landline phone plugs into the provided adapter
