The 1.8 trillion number is Romer's number which Krugman agreed with. Galbraith's prescription was to stimulate until there was evidence, firm evidence it was working.

There are two different questions here. One is how much of a stimulus it would have taken to address, seriously, the economic downturn. The second is what was politically possible. It's perfectly fair game to continue to make the point that inadequate economic plans were put in place, for whatever reason. It's yet one more way to say our politics can't address our needs.

It's hardly just these three economists saying so. We need more who are willing to say that, less we come to the conclusion that nothing more could have been done.
