>> How would you define torture?

I'm okay with a standard dictionary definition: Infliction of severe physical pain as a means of punishment or coercion; Excruciating physical or mental pain; agony; Something causing severe pain or anguish.

The key points here are "severe", "excruciating", "agony", etc. While there was one report of infliction of pain, in general these, while humilating and inappropriate, were not torture tactics.

I would add "systematic". There is no evidence of any systematic use of torture tactics. There is plenty of innuendo. The photos I've seen do not consititute torture. Isolated abuse or atrocities. But not torture.

It is too bad this happened. But it is, unfortunately, one of the realities of war. When you send people out and tell them to shoot and kill other people, there are some who are going to get confused about right and wrong. I think it has happened in about every war I can think of.

It is unfortunate that it has given the anti-war fanatics fodder because the war is accomplishing important change in the region and the actions of these few Americans have surely put American and Iraqi civilian lives at risk.
