Some consider Islam to have developed primarily as a response to christological controversy. Muslims' ideas are based largely on Judeo-Christianity, naming Abraham and Jesus as prominent figures. Jesus' disciples are called good Muslims in the Koran, which would make them all prophetic since they were about 600 years ahead of the blessed prophet Mohammed. (Show respect when mentioning that name!) I think Muslim just means submitted to God, in the broad sense.
