My first chess board on the farm I made out of a cardboard box--and the pieces, too. I was selling Christmas cards and garden seeds about 1/2 mile between houses--NOT AN EASY CARRY. Every month or two I could order books in the mail. They were 50 cents or so...depending. I was reading classics when I was very young...but I always loved my "Dover" chess arrivals! Of course, I had nobody to play with in such a matter... If your daughter loves chess...I hope she has a club to go to. You never know...at seven, she may be a potential chanpion at some level.
