Shoptalk: Verizon Wireless CEO: Wireless Has Arrived
story.news.yahoo.com
Excerpt:

"Our network is always, by far, the lion's share of our capital expenses," Verizon Wireless chief technical officer Dick Lynch told Wireless NewsFactor.

The company said its network investments in 2001 boosted its cell site coverage by 13 percent, and that more than a fifth of its nationwide network has now been upgraded to high-speed 1XRTT technology -- suitable for advanced wireless data services.

"The beauty of the technology we chose -- 1XRTT -- is that it not only is highly spectrum-efficient, but also highly capital-efficient," Lynch said.

He also noted that the carrier launched next-generation data service in January key markets on the East and West coasts.

Two Sides of a Coin

Verizon Wireless will continue to invest in rolling out 1XRTT networks this year, but its more pressing concern is releasing the sophisticated devices that use these networks. For the networks to be of optimal use, consumers have to have the right devices in hand.

"Our goal this year is to release the devices that use this new technology," Nelson said. "We hope to do that this quarter."
