My recollection about magnetic silver, from an article on LeMetropole Cafe, is that less expensively wrought silver jewelry is plated with nickle or rhodium which fills in irregularities in the silver. It is possible that it is the nickle or rhodium which is magnetically attractive. I have not read the follow up to that article; however, the conclusion one drew was that if neither nickle nor rhodium were magnetically charged, then a lot of stainless steel is being sold as sterling silver. FWIW.
