Apple still tops in school and college grad ownership Surveys Confirm Apple is Number One Brand in K-12 and College Markets; More College Students Own Macintosh Computers Than Any Other Brand, Reports IDC/LINK
CUPERTINO, Calif., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced that from kindergarten through college, Apple remains the number one brand in the U.S. education market, recent surveys confirm. In the K-12 segment, Quality Education Data (QED), a Denver research firm, reports that Apple Macintosh computers account for 60 percent of the 5.9 million machines in use in U.S. schools during the 1995-1996 school year. This compares with 29 percent for personal computers based on the Microsoft Windows/Intel platform and 11 percent for personal computers that are only capable of running DOS. The Macintosh also reigns supreme among college students. IDC/LINK, a New York-based subsidiary of International Data Corp. of Framingham, Mass., reports that 18.4 percent of four-year students who own a computer own a Macintosh, making Apple the number one brand in that market segment. Tied for second place, with less than 12 percent market share each, were Packard Bell and IBM. "The Apple Macintosh still has the number one presence in computers among college students nationwide," said Ray Boggs, a senior analyst at IDC/LINK. The IDC/LINK report, "The 1997 Higher Education Market," was based on telephone interviews with 1,504 college students in December 1996. It states that "more college students own Macintosh computers than any other brand." The study also found that more than half (55 percent) of today's college students own computers. The QED study, Educational Technology Trends, 9th Edition, was done in collaboration with IDC/LINK in the spring of 1996. It surveyed 2,500 school districts and 5,000 schools nationwide with a response rate of about 10 percent. "These surveys are further proof of our leadership in education technology," said Mike Lorion, vice president of Education for Apple Computer, Inc. "We pioneered the first classroom computers and we remain committed to providing the best possible access to information and lifelong learning. We believe that our continued partnership with education and the fact that we provide the best possible learning tools will keep us at the top."
