Gary, re: "The challenge for Intel is to find a way to move up the "food chain". From making CPU's for PC, to making CPU's/graphics chips/motherboards/systems for the workstation and business computers (where the margins and revenue are)."

Are you saying Intel should go into the workstation or business computer business? Intel's John Hull has been very vociferous about Intel NOT having any plans to compete with their customers by going into the "box" business. This is not to say that they won't build assembled motherboards (baseboards to the politically correct) or even completed PC's and sell them to box vendors who need only put their logo on it and re-sell it (in the case of the complete PC). This gives a box vendor the quickest to market strategy when Intel comes out with new MPU's, etc. So, I think they are making all the components you mention, or are building them into their CPU chips.

BTW, what's wrong with 62% gross margin and $21 billion 1996 sales?

Tony
