Well I use VISA for paying gasoline, clothes, CDs, restaurant but I use my smartcard (called Proton here in Belgium) to pay for small items like newspaper, croissants, drinks, parking...it's very very convenient because fast and no more change is needed. In fact I never carry money even though I spend my life across 3 countries (Belgium Luxembourg and France). For now I only use my smartcard in Belgium but next year I'll pay in EUROs whereever I go with the same cards.
