8/30/2019 Contest update
The week began with the shocking and sad news of the death of FibroGen CEO, Thomas Neff. FGEN has been a perennial Contest portfolio top pick and I imagine is a real life holding for many of you, as it is for me. Neff was respected as a scientist and CEO but the reaction by investors to his death was somewhat macabre, with FGEN’s stock initially jumping $3. Investors, it seems, believed Neff’s death made a FGEN buyout at a premium more likely in the near future.
Meanwhile, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 10.33% YTD (vs. up 9.34% a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 6.28% YTD (vs. up 5.56% a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 11.54% YTD (vs. up 10.09% a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 20.01% YTD (vs. up 16.83% YTD a week ago).
BULBA’s portfolio remained in first place with a 94.20% YTD gain. ANDRE’s portfolio, up 54.16% YTD, and OHMS’ portfolio, up 50.26% YTD, continued to hold on to second and third place.
At Friday's close, 26 of the 39 Contest portfolios were now in the green, while 20 were still beating the NBI and 19 were still beating the SPSIBI.
The 167 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 14.65% and, moving back into positive territory, a median YTD gain of 1.58%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a safe & relaxing Labor Day weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
