The disaster that ultimately led to the depression was the extreme monopolies of the guilded age. This could be roughly bounded by the 100 years from about 1840 to 1940. This included many of the darkest moments in American History and did so because of the unregulated power and wealth of the second and third generation from the industrial revolution. If not for reformers like Teddy Roosevelt the titans of capital may have caused more harm.
