Can you even imagine how difficult and EXPENSIVE it would be for the average PC user to try and move information from one compute to the next (as from the office to the home). It would be an a complete slaughter of the PC user by the PC industry! What we have today wasn't even imagined until Apple came along, and wasn't possible until IBM consorted with MSFT and INTC. Then it wasn't economically feasible until MSFT broke away form IBM and brought INTC with them to form the WINTEL platform.
