I have a friend that is about as far left politically as anyone I know. Yet he has tattoos a drunken sailor would be proud of(extremely sexist), sports a crap load of guns and is an absolute warmonger. He thinks the only good Arab is dead Arab. His wife was in the SDS back in the day. The American flag hanging on his driveway has gotta be 10 or 12 feet wide.

My guess is that money and possessions and keeping same trumps common decency almost every time.
