Android is beating up Apple when it come to market share

Apple's recent woes are due in part to Android’s widening share of the worldwide smartphone market.

Devices running Google’s Android operating system now make up 65.5 percent of the U.S. market, up 7.3
percent from the same time a year ago, according to numbers out from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Android makes up a whopping 75.6 percent of the top five European markets (U.K., France, Germany, Italy
and Spain), up 7.1 percent from 2015.

In the increasingly competitive Chinese urban sector, Android phones enjoy a 77 percent market share, up 6
percent from a year ago. The numbers represent market share from the first quarter of each year (January-
March).

During the same period, Apple’s iOS market share in Europe declined from 20.2 percent to 18.9 percent in
the first quarter of 2016. In urban China, iOS market share sits at 21.1 percent, down from 26.1 at the same
time in 2015.
