Crist: Oil spill makes you re-think things

blogs.orlandosentinel.com

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Charlie Crist is obviously in a deep-thinking mood these days. And Crist said the Louisiana oil rig explosion is causing him to re-think his previous support for expanding oil drilling closer to Florida shores if it’s “far enough, clean enough and safe enough.”

“If this doesn’t give somebody pause, there’s something wrong, I think,” Crist told reporters. “This was as I understand it a pretty new rig with some modern technology. … I’m not sure this was far enough, pretty sure it wasn’t clean enough, and it doesn’t sound like it was safe enough.”

Crist is considering going over to Pensacola later today to take an aerial tour of the slick floating east toward Florida waters.

On the budget, Crist reiterated he wanted lawmakers to pass a spending plan that took care of the most vulnerable Floridians, but that it was too early to tell whether he would veto parts or all of the $69 billion 2010-11 budget that was finalized early this morning/late last night.

And of course, he hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll run for the U.S. Senate as an independent. Look for that decision on Thursday.
