You got it ! The only stocks that need to be added are ones that appear on a
scan result list. If some are already in MS format the update using the list will
only add the new ones and ignore any already there.

Yep. Finally with everyone's help.

Now, would you mind telling me how you keep your *.TXT lists updated. Here is an
example. I have OWN.TXT & WATCH.TXT in my WOW directory so that I can
place them into a group. I read them in and everything is running fine.

Now a couple of weeks go by and I need to delete all of MS files and the WOW data
directory. I go through the routine to generate it all, but I need to readd the stocks to
my OWN & WATCH Groups. Is there a way to keep those files permanent? I ask
since if you delete, like I did, you don't have these in a group any longer, you only
have the READ function to get them back. Remember, I am still playing with this
portion. I plan tonight to delete again and see what happens to those OWN &
WATCH groups/list/text files.

A couple of points to clarify here. QP update existing dirs does just that and only updates securities present in the target metastock directories. If you add symbols manually or generate a new list via a scan you must redo the exports symbols to single or multiple dirs overtop of the existing data to add the new symbols the MS database.
If you don't add symbols daily or don't mind doing this manually then
its not too deficient. I use it slightly differently. Each day I do
the following through an automated process using WINBATCH and PERL.

A. Download data
B. Update Database
C. Run Multiple QP Scans
1. modified BBB scan
2. breakout scan
3. modified brookins scan
4. been playing with the CCI scan a little
D. Export resultant lists to metastock dirs
E. Archive all daily and weekly scan results to archive

BBB in its own list.
Breakouts go into their own list breakout.lst
CCI goes into its own list

I type an Friday IBD List at least twice a month and have
brian killough IBD 70/70 list on hand as well.

IBD list is static. Brookings results are appended to IBD list and sorted and uniquified.

I use this list as input to a CCI scan which I just output todays results to a fresh list.

The BBB candidates are appended to the current list of BBB stocks. I added the new ones to the existing ones and sort and uniquify. I delete this list when it gets over 150-200 issues. Otherwise it grows
as candidates are picked.

Then I take the BBB list and scan for breakouts and that is generally what I am going to look at in Metastock.

I then output all the above lists into metastock format into several different metastock dirs. Basically one for each scan of component plus open positions, favorites, and computer networking stocks.

Finally each list created as result of the scan is archived in an archive with a name like ibdbbb_09141997.txt.

Then I am ready to look at charts in MS. I start with breakouts
and then may run a DNS stochRsi explorer or Insyc explorer for additional candidates. I may go back and add these to one of QP lists for scanning.

I know this may sound a little complicated but to me its seems
pratical. I have scripts do all the work all I have to do is wait
30 minutes and its done. I can't wait till gary gets earlier data.
It would nice to be able to look at stocks before dinner.....
:)

I can't comment on groups in wow. Metastocks handling of lists of
securities is weak at best.
