Oil price record on Iraq attack
New York oil traders have watched prices surge
Oil prices have reached fresh highs on news of an attack on an Iraqi oil well.

Prices for a barrel of Brent Crude reached $44.11 in London before falling slightly. New York's key oil price traded just below its $46.91 record.

Earlier in the day, oil prices had fallen after producer nation Venezuela voted to keep Hugo Chavez as president.

However, as news emerged of an attack by insurgents on a small oil well in southern Iraq, the price of oil began to climb again.

With 94% of ballots counted, Mr Chavez had 58% of the vote, according to the latest figures from Venezuela's electoral authorities.

Mr Chavez's pledge to guarantee oil market stability had brought prices down from their 21-year high of $46.85 reached in overnight trade. The benchmark barrel price in New York later fell back and at 1425 GMT was 26 cents lower at $46.32.
