Beachbumm,

Yeah, I love hearing stories like these. One time I had to research some portraits hanging in an old library. They needed to be identified. So, I had the privilege of looking through all of the library's collection of old handwritten books, some from the 1700's and all written and preserved by the townspeople. It was hard work! I found them very difficult to read because of poor spelling and strange terms not in use today, and I could hardly understand the English. It was so foreign, and yet it was America only around 250 years ago.

Still, my best results came from seeking out the older people in town who were in their 80' and 90's and who still remembered stories passed down to them about who was who and who did what. It was great!

I managed to identify 8 out of 10 portraits, and realized that it may have been just in time since my best source of information were these old people and their memories and stories.
