But if we subsidize that process, we leave ourselves open to making a choice that is bad for us.

Look at this country's biggest venture into alternative energy, ethanol. The only reason an ethanol industry exists in this country is because the government heavily subsidizes it. this hurts alternative energy research in other areas by making an inefficient energy source way too price competitive.

Why not let wind energy compete? Or, for that matter, the other product that Boone is pushing, natural gas? If the government subsidizes it the way that Boone would like, it makes these two energy sources more competitive than the energy that they produce would demand. And if alternative research comes up with a better form of energy production, that better form can easily get thrown under the bus because the money is flowing to other methods of energy production that aren't as efficient.

The best solution is for the government to get the heck out of the way. If you look for spending more money on whatever favored industry is in vogue, all you're going to do is send money to whomever gives the biggest bribes, scarcely a good way to allocate capital. Why not ask for LESS spending in oil and gas?
