Xing Technology's StreamWorks 3.0 optimizes video capabilities
By InfoWorld Electric staff
Posted at 5:00 p.m., PT, July 22 Xing Technology on Tuesday announced the release of StreamWorks 3.0, its third-generation audio/video software that broadcasts full-motion, full-screen video. Developed under the MPEG1 ISO standard, StreamWorks draws power from video-acceleration boards in all modern PCs and leverages MMX and Microsoft's DirectX architectures to create an optimal video solution. Although StreamWorks 3.0 is currently targeted at enterprise networks and remote markets, such as education and corporate training, it has also set future sights on the Internet. Wider distribution of video technologies such as ATM and cable modems may bring quality multicasts to the Net in the next 12 to 18 months. StreamWorks 3.0 addresses Internet bandwith efficiency by enabling full-motion, MPEG-quality broadcasting over an enterprise network. The StreamWorks 3.0 package includes the StreamWorks Server, with just-released MPEG Encoder2, allowing the authoring, delivery, and playback of digital content. StreamWorks Server is currently available for Windows NT 4.0, Linux, Alpha NT, and soon for other Unix platforms. Also included in the package is the StreamWorks Player, a helper application compatible with Web browsers that takes advantage of video acceleration and DirectX technology, now available for free from Xing's Web site. StreamWorks, including all components to encode and broadcast MPEG files, is licensed by seat with pricing at about $60 per seat for a 50-seat solution, dropping to about $40 per seat at 300 seats. Xing's MPEG Live Encoder for producing live broadcasts is available for $4,000 and an Internet server gateway is also available as an option to make content available to the Web.
