WHATEVER THE WEATHER

Iain Murray
The Corner

As mentioned previously, the climate alarmists are currently engaged in a Battle of the Bulge style offensive to get Congress to pass some form of restriction on energy use, which will be the camel's nose in the tent that'll allow them to drag the whole camel in.

Today's assault comes in Salon, which headlines with two articles on global warming. The first is the usual litany of half-truths and exaggerations, including this one:

<<< The Kyoto Protocol isn't merely a political document -- it's the equivalent of market research. Viewing the protocol from this perspective, we see that most of the world's nations believe climate change is real and urgent and are attempting to do something about it. >>>

Err, no. Of the 155 nations that have signed up to Kyoto, only 32 are actually attempting to do something about it, and of those that haven't met their targets by virtue of economic collapse (ie Eastern Europe) only a couple are actually meeting their targets. If this is market research, it's the equivalent of someone expressing concern to a researcher about obesity and then buying their third candy bar of the day.

It goes on. The solution advanced is carbon taxes; the fact that carbon taxes make transportation and delivery more expensive and therefore cause job losses and economic recession in industries that depend on them is dismissed with a "need to consider the impacts." Well, that's what President Bush and others are already doing; they consider the price not worth paying.

The second article is a lament that TV weather reporters don't issue scary warning about global warming. I'm serious.
