US soldier killed in Baghdad rocket attack
By afp in Baghdad

An American soldier was killed and six were wounded when their patrol was ambushed today in Baghdad.

The soldiers came under attack with rocket-propelled grenades in the al-Mansur district of the capital, according to the US military.

Another convoy was attacked today on a highway north of the capital. One US soldier and two Iraqis were wounded.

The fatality brings to 32 the number of American troops killed since President Bush declared major combat operations over in Iraq on May 1.

The latest US operation to wipe out Iraqi resistance has netted more than 200 suspects and yielded a large cache of weapons, the military said today.

Operation Ivy Serpent in its second day has resulted in the capture of 226 detainees and the confiscation of 800 mortar rounds a statement said, adding that assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades had also been seized.

The operation, launched on Saturday, follows three other campaigns: Peninsula Strike, Desert Scorpion and Sidewinder.

The US has denied reports that Iraqi civilians had been killed or wounded in the operation’s 27 raids, adding that there had been no US casualties.
