Thanks to all who congratulated me for the birth of my son.
Have fun reading these, I did. I obviously have lots of time in my hands at work these days, not much going on. If you do your own taxes you will have so much fun filling out Sch. D this year. Good time to get a good CPA or a tax software program if your taxes are simpler. H&R Block wil make lots of money, the new Sch D is Unbelievable, I could just imagine an assembly line worker always doing his own tax return having a few capital gain distributions from a mutual fund or two....he has to go through all the lines (lots of them)....Oh, Intuit will do quite well too.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subj: You're talking sense By: pcdiva Date: Nov 1 1997 9:10 A.M PST Reply To: Msg. 31 by mweill My husband and I too are hardcore Novell fans. We have had to kick and fight to get bordermanager (not borderwise) into several companies we work with-almost in spite of Novell.
I have never agreed more than with your statement. This co has it all over NT and shouldn't be having these image problems with the right marketing. They should REALLY advertise that not only do they do more than NT but they also do more w/o as much major overhaul in the hardware arena (which NT requires). Putting NT in my clients make me more $$ up front but I seldomly have a happy customer because of the huge investment. Companies would jump all over the cost benefits and the technical merits of bordermanager if Novell zeroed in on this. Companies really watch their pennies.
Also, I haven't heard Novell pounding the pavement like Microsoft does. I would be happy to bring Novell into my client base if they would knock on my door. Microsoft's reps are dynamic and are all over the place-they knock on resellers, clients, etc. doors everywhere. Where is Novell?

You are rigt on some of the things that you sai, and congratulations for taking the time to reply.
One point that I would make about Microsoft, the player on top, Gates, has mountains of business sense, fully understands opportunities, fully unserstands processes, and doesn't go out of his way to reinvent the wheel. He is an integrator, super opportunist key qualities for success, okay he is agood manager. Nothwithstanding Microsoft's other blessings, I think that his natural good business sense is what has separeted him from the pack. Get rid of these inventor/scientist types at the top they will take the company straight to hell. These companies need people with a super business orientation and computer PhD's. Well thats what I think, give more Gates and we will conquer the world together. Its all about business not computers or networks etc. at the top its all business, get the point. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subj: just one more story..... By: mangas2 Date: Dec 2 1997 8:48 P.M PST Reply To: Msg. 71 by drdmb Novell is one the most frustrating stocks out there; have been eyeing it for over three years and it cost me some expired calls some time ago; a good point was made earlier; eric being a tech guy, the implication being he is not a business guy; you will notice the company trying to go it from the ground up by concentrating on product design, open architecture etc., rather leverage their assets (cash, existing client base) this company needs aggressive, bold thinking at the top; what they have is tentative scientists trying to build a better mousetrap (admirable) while MSFT slowly and consistently eats away at market share; yes, its about product, but it seems like you only need to be good enough so long as you got the sizzle; this stock has no sizzle at all; ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subj: Novell--a test of patience! By: peterlobo Date: Dec 3 1997 3:01 P.M PST Reply To: Msg. 1 by YahooFinance Novell is definitely on my buy list as impatient investors keep selling for tax reasons and kicking it back into the $8+ level where I keep buying.
Reasons : * Rich $1B Cash hoard --if only techno Eric, who I have a lot of respect for, announced a $200M share buyback on the day of their better than expected earnings report it would appease the long disillusioned. But as he explained on TV the next day he want to wait one more quarter for the ship to stabilize. Wall streeters have the heard mentality and this would propel the instant gratification crowd. * I agree that at this point Novell needed a expert in Java and the internet to steer the ship and generate new products-- Novell has a established large market share; the channel already exists; what is lacking is stuff more and better products through the channel. * I was impressed with the mailsystem they set up at Comdex. Powered by Compag servers people were using it by the truckload and response was good .(Could Compag make a bid for Novell with all the cash sitting in their piggy bank?. Probably not; probably Eric's old boss at SUN may be the bidder?!) * Their new products are winning rave reviews; rather than fighting Microsoft--a sure recipe for disaster--they are porting products over WinNT.
Winner for 1998--if it does not go to approx $14 then I am definitely looking at the situation through colored glasses! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subj: I finally gave up on NOVL By: tiara2c Date: Dec 5 1997 3:12 P.M PST Reply To: Msg. 89 by rlafont Heck, I thought I was the patient one. Brought Novell at 20 3/8 almost 30 months ago. Never saw it go up, finally gave up and sold it all at 8 3/8 last week. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ . .
I bought NOVL on a hunch which has not yet paid off, but the recent actions by the company under the new CEO bode favorably for the new year. The planets will be alligned in conjunction with solar influences so that the SUNw and its sattelites can prevail over past difficulties (MSFT) with the aid of planetary alliances on the psychic network - NOVL. Dionne Warwicke should be brought in as NOVL spokesperson to herald the new connections. The age of Aquarius is a perfect networking sign. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Reply Subj: Lance2j By: groping Date: Dec 9 1997 11:55 A.M PST Reply To: Msg. 106 by lance2j I am in agreement that the motto of the new CEO of Novl "ride on the dragon's--MSoft's-- back instead of trying to slay it" is the correct approach.
Enjoy the ride in NOVL to approx $14 but not until later in 1Q of 98.
There is just too much negativism in the high tech sector now. Even better for the IRA accounts!
PS Have you heard a rumor that NOVL may be considering a merger with the RDBMS company called Informix.NOVL is cash rich; IFMX is cash poor but idea rich! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: NOVELL By: TORITORI Date: Dec 10 1997 8:58 A.M PST Reply To: Msg. 1 by YahooFinance THIS STOCK IS CRAP,BELONGS IN TOILET,WON'T GO NO PLACE, FIGURE IT OUT. I have a Novell sever in service for over 3 years with minimal problems. Added an NT server with a new accounting package six months ago and have had nothing but problems and very poor service. If quality counts Novell is a winner in my book. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: 100% right By: Mirror Stables Date: Dec 18 1997 6:42 A.M PST Reply To: Msg. 143 by bigdanr
I have 37 Novell networks in operation and asside from some minor glitches with their Version 4 internet software everything runs efficiently. Have 3 NT severs running and 3 nightmares!! Microsoft has buffaloed network administrators and I wonder If these network administrator use the NT to secure their own jobs!! Novell is certainly overlooked at the current price. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: Yes, good server, but... Agree that Novell has an excellent server product but it has not been received well as an application server which is where NT is making big inroads. Plus Novell marketing has been referred to by its own people as "stealth" marketing. Plus there's the perception that Novell may not survive which keeps big companies from committing to long term use of its flagship NetWare. NDS is great (we have the largest Novell NDS tree in the world) and MS cannot match it at all. But MS marketing has been able to create the perception that their enhanced Domain system is a true directory and is roughly comparable to NDS. It appears that only the technicians know the true story. It really does appear that technical superiority cannot compete with superior marketing. A lot of people I know are replacing NetWare with NT just on the strength of the perception that NT is winning. The NetWare servers are solid and still serving them well but there's the perception that NT is "taking over" and no one wants to be left behind. So everyone I know is taking NT classes since that is where the surge in demand seems to be going. I understand the Border Manager product is an absolute hit (we're going to be adopting it company-wide) but I fear that it and products like it will have a hard time (at least in the short term) replacing the revenue lost from reduced sales of NetWare. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
