looks like webscanx is your mcafee virus scanner. try closing that and see if it's enough to get you a clean scandisk. keep in mind that the 'thorough' option really lives up to its name, and then some. you might try the faster version.

and if you want to be extra sure about no writes to disk, close everything except explorer and systray

I tried initially closing webscanx. I got a system abend when I closed it and it brought up the blue error screen. Hitting enter returned me to desktop, so I just went ahead and tried the Diskscan. Ended up with the same error about something writing to disk.

Deleted the rest as you suggested and tried it again. This time I was able to complete both a Scandisk and a disk defrag (I was having the same problem there).

However, since doing that, I am not able to access my e-mail through Outlook. Everytime I try to bring up Outlook, I get the following error message:

"MSIMN
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

And in detail it says:

"MSIMN caused an invalid page default in module MSOE.DLL at 0167:5fl9flac" and goes on to list some registers.

Can you suggest a way of dealing with this? I have never encountered this error before.

Naturally, the computer has been shut off and restarted since the Diskscan/defrag.

Edit: Should also mention that Internet Explorer works fine.

Thanks,
Tom
